Latest on Rams, S-Jax
By Tim Kavanagh
One of the biggest unresolved issues for the St. Louis Rams this offseason is the status of star RB Steven Jackson. Jackson is expected to void his contract, making him an unrestricted free agent, but the Rams would like to bring him back, at least based on all of their public comments on the matter. As of earlier this week, the team had yet to meet with Jackson's representation.
That is expected to change sometime very soon. Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the two sides will meet at the scouting combine, which began Wednesday, turned everyone's Twitter timeline into an echo chamber on Thursday with coach and GM interviews, and will really get rolling on Saturday, when the on-field workouts begin.
The Rams can't really afford Jackson at his current 2013 contract value ($7 million) anyway, so they'll be feeling out the situation as much as he will over the next several days. If he does leave town, he'll head a fairly strong group at the position in free agency, though it's a position that has not drawn huge contracts (save for superstars) in recent seasons. As for the Rams, they'd be left with 2012 draft picks Daryl Richardson and Isaiah Pead, and could add another option in free agency or the draft.
