Cardinals playing tag?
By Tim Kavanagh
The period of time during which NFL teams can place the franchise tag on their players began on Monday, but it's not expected to really gain much momentum until we get closer to the March 4 deadline. Nevertheless, we've been going through a number of franchise tag decisions in recent posts to offer a sense of what could happen. One team on which there's been little discussion is the Arizona Cardinals, so will any of their free agents get hit with the tag?
In the opinion of Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com, it's almost a certainty that the Cards will not be tagging anyone. In fact, of the impending free agents on the roster from 2012, there are really just two that are considered priorities -- CB Greg Toler and RB LaRod Stephens-Howling -- and neither of them will be offered a contract that approaches the tag tender value for their respective positions.
So that's the good news; the bad news is that the Cardinals don't have anyone on their roster that they'd consider valuable enough to use the franchise tag upon. But, there's a new leadership structure in place. Once they find themselves an NFL-caliber QB, they'll be on the road back to contending.
