New idea on Alex Smith

By Tim Kavanagh

It's been assumed for the past few weeks that the San Francisco 49ers will be moving Alex Smith somewhere else for 2013, and with many QB-needy teams around the league, there would figure to be a market for a player that was as effective as the Utah product over the past two seasons. Nevertheless, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported this week that the market may not be as strong as earlier thought, based upon the financial aspects of employing Smith, as well as the idea that the Niners wouldn't necessarily want to trade him to a division rival in Arizona.

In a blog post on Thursday, Kevin Lynch of the San Francisco Chronicle proposes a new idea: "Tell Smith he can go anywhere he wants except Arizona, or he can stay with the 49ers. It may turn out that the best scenario for Smith and the 49ers is for Smith to stay in San Francisco red and gold."

There are a lot of moving parts here, and any team to which Smith wants to go would have to also want him (as well as pony up whatever price the 49ers want for him in trade). So it's not quite as simple as Lynch proposes. The next few weeks are going to be very interesting ones on this front.
