More hints on Urlacher
By Tim Kavanagh
One of the big questions for the Chicago Bears as they traverse the first offseason with HC Marc Trestman at the helm is whether they'll be re-signing franchise icon Brian Urlacher to a new contract. No. 54's current deal expires this offseason, and there have been mixed signals previously as to whether he'd be returning.
This week, Trestman confirmed that he has talked to the LB, but not regarding anything specific contract-wise. "I spoke with (Urlacher) on the phone, probably a 30-40 minute discussion," Trestman confirmed, per the Chicago Tribune. "He was great, and we just talked generally about the team, not specifically about his situation. I asked him about the team and our locker room and tried to gather as much information as I could to try to do a better job as we move through the spring."
As for Urlacher's intentions on coming back? "I don't think there's any question that he loves Chicago," Trestman added. "I'll just leave it at that. I'm not as attuned to the entire situation, certainly the economics and all the things that go into it. That's going to be a process between Brian and the organization as we move forward."
It's a process that could be ongoing right up until the start of the new league year on March 12. If Urlacher is not re-signed by then -- GM Phil Emery has said that he won't be using the franchise tag this offseason -- he'll be an unrestricted free agent, an outcome that would've seemed crazy months ago.
