Possible trade ideas for Alex Smith
By Vince Verhei
Ready for some rampant speculation? Glenn Dickey of the San Francisco Examiner sees a few teams at the top of the NFL draft who might be willing to make a deal with the San Francisco 49ers to acquire veteran quarterback Alex Smith.
In Dickey's eyes, the Kansas City Chiefs and Cleveland Browns would be most willing to trade for Smith. "The Chiefs have the very first pick in the draft, which they won’t give up, but their second-round pick would be virtually a first rounder," he writes. "The Browns have hired Norv Turner as their offensive coordinator and Turner is a big admirer of Smith’s, after having been the Niners’ offensive coordinator in Alex’s third season. They need a quarterback desperately and might be willing to give up their first-round pick because this draft has no sure-thing QBs."
Dickey might be over-rating Smith's trade value, considering he turns 29 in May and has had just one 3,000-yard season, but he is right that the Chiefs and Browns are desperate for new passers.
