Blount a sneaky fantasy play?
By Tom Carpenter
As we noted on Wednesday, New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick likely will have no choice but to give Stevan Ridley a tabula rasa after last week's fumblitis that landed him on the bench, because Shane Vereen is now out for the foreseeable future. However, we can't expect Ridley to tote every carry for the Pats against the New York Jets Thursday evening, so who else might get into the mix?
Well, Brandon Bolden missed the opener with a knee malady and remains listed as questionable for tonight. If active, he could help the Pats. Leon Washington could be an option in deeper PPR fantasy leagues, because he could slip into the third-down role as a decent pass protector and catcher, but he just joined the team, so it's debatable how much of a role he could play that quickly.
In the end, if you're looking for a sneaky fantasy play this week in standard leagues, it's probably going to be LeGarrette Blount, who averaged 5.7 yards on 24 carries in the preseason. That included 101 yards and two scores on 11 carries in the Pats' preseason opener, during which he looked quite spry.
Considering how quickly he fell off the radar during his final couple of seasons with the Bucs, it's easy to feel like he's washed up. However, keep in mind that while Blount may not be capable of being a workhorse No. 1 back, he is only 26 and may well be able to make some big plays tonight.
