Spikes hopes to hang on

By AJ Mass

Takeo Spikes signed with the San Diego Chargers in 2011, leaving his old team behind, in part, because he felt his new team was going to give him a better chance at winning a Super Bowl. Looking back, Spikes was clearly wrong. Today, he's watching his former teammates, the San Francisco 49ers, play for the title.

Spikes tells the San Diego Union-Tribune that he doesn't want to make the same mistake twice. "It's the same guys with some key additions," Spikes told the paper. "To me the biggest addition I saw, it's (Jim) Harbaugh."

Spikes is currently faced with another coaching change as the Chargers have brought in Mike McCoy to replace Norv Turner. He has one year left on his contract, but at 36, may well end up being sent packing with a new regime in place, especially with a $3 million price tag. Still, he's hoping to stay. "You've got new blood in the building, and any time you've got new blood in the building, you never do know."
