EJ Manuel's deadline to start the season
By Brent Sobleski
Undrafted free agent Jeff Tuel is expected to start at quarterback for the Buffalo Bills to open the season against the New England Patriots. It would be the first time an undrafted free agent quarterback opened the season as a team's starter since 1967.
Let's let that sink in for a moment.
Tuel may start, but the more important question is when will first round pick and the franchise's future, EJ Manuel, be ready to play? The possibility exists Manuel will open the season as the Bills' starter.
Buffalo head coach Doug Marrone won't rush Manuel into the lineup. He's simply waiting to hear from the team's doctors to make an informed decision.
"EJ Manuel probably will need to be cleared for full practice by next Wednesday for the Buffalo Bills to be comfortable enough to start him in the season opener against the New England Patriots," Tim Graham of BullaloNews.com reported.
Said Marrone, "If the doctor said, 'You're not going to get him on that field until Thursday, and then he'll be ready to play on Sunday,' I would be concerned about doing that. If they said, 'Hey, we can get him on that field on Monday or Wednesday, I would see how he played and make a decision."
