Who will the Bengals keep at FB?
By Brent Sobleski
NFL fans have been given the opportunity to watch the Cincinnati Bengals' camp competitions thanks to HBO's Hard Knocks. One of the closer competitions to call is which fullback will the Bengals' retain once final roster decisions are made. The team may lean towards the traditional fullback.
John Conner, aka the Terminator, and Orson Charles continue to battle for a roster spot. Charles, a converted tight end, appears to be the odd man out.
"(Charles) could end up beating John Conner for the fullback spot since the competition is too close to call," Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer wrote. "He needs to be more consistent in blocking though. There also remains a possibility that they could keep both Charles and Conner and release Alex Smith. Everyone talks about Charles versatility but the third tight end is usually a blocker, and if Charles is struggling as a blocker what is the point?"
Conner is certainly a traditional blocking fullback. Charles won't be able to compete with Conner as a blocker. The Bengals and offensive coordinator Jay Gruden could decide to use Charles and Alex Smith in H-back roles within the team's west coast offense. Conner may have the edge at the moment according to Reedy, but the Bengals still have a tough decision to make.
