More on Reed and the Pats

By Tim Kavanagh

There's been buzz for weeks now that Ed Reed could potentially sign with the New England Patriots as a free agent this upcoming offseason, and Reed himself seems quite open to the possibility, based upon his comments on Wednesday. But there are some issues that will impact this potential pairing.

First is the matter of whether Reed will even hit free agency. After competing in the Super Bowl on Sunday, the Ravens will have weeks to work out a new contract with Reed, Joe Flacco, Cary Williams and any of their other impending FAs, and can use the franchise tag on one of the players with whom they don't. Many believe that they're saving the tag in case things don't proceed quickly with Flacco, but if something is worked out quickly, Reed could be the recipient.

Even if Reed does hit free agency, the Pats may not necessarily be interested in meeting his salary demands:

Would Reed's deal fit the budget?
"Reed won't come cheap. Pats have to decide if he's worth signing at the expense of other in-house FAs. There's no way Patriots can sign Ed Reed, Wes Welker, Aqib Talib and Sebastian Vollmer all to big-money extensions. Someone has to walk."
