Winfield still in play for Redskins?

4/3/2013

The Washington Redskins decided to bring back CB DeAngelo Hall for the 2013 campaign, which has raised questions about whether they would still be interested or even financially capable of signing fellow free agent CB Antoine Winfield. According to the Washington Post's Mike Jones, there are conflicting opinions on the matter.

"The Washington Redskins remain interested in signing veteran cornerback Antoine Winfield despite bringing back DeAngelo Hall at a reduced salary, a person with knowledge of the situation said. Two others, however, questioned whether the salary cap-strapped Redskins had a realistic shot at landing Winfield," wrote Jones.

"... The Redskins’ message to Winfield’s representatives was that they had a plan for how to create enough room beneath the cap to sign the cornerback to a deal."

Due to their cap-space penalty imposed last season, the Redskins only had about $1 million of space prior to Hall's signing, but if they can figure a way to pay Winfield, they may still land him, too. Per Jones's source, the signing of Hall "made Washington more attractive to Winfield."

Per Dan Wiederer of the Star-Tribune, the Vikings remain in play for Winfield, who likely won't make a decision until next week.
