Jets targeting a QB in Rounds 1 or 2?

5/8/2014

Rumors continue to swirl in regards to what the New York Jets plan to do today.

There's some talk of the Jets possibly trading up, but as Rich Cimini of ESPN's NFL Nation points out, it would likely come at a steep cost. "If the Jets trade places with Titans (11), they'd have to give up a 3 and two 4s, according to draft value chart," he writes.

Cimini also spoke to a rival personnel executive who felt strongly about what the Jets should do with their first pick. "Feed the defense," the executive said. "The only way the Jets win is if they dominate on defense."

And yes, the Jets need help at cornerback, a position they could address at No. 18. But they also need a big-play receiver to pair with free agent acquisition Eric Decker, a pass-catching tight end, and also have to keep an eye out at quarterback since Geno Smith's future as a NFL starter remains very uncertain. That could put them in play for guys like LSU WR Odell Beckham Jr. or North Carolina TE Eric Ebron somewhere in the middle of the first round.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports that the "Jets are doing a lot of groundwork for QBs that may land in the first round or early in the 2nd round," and lists Fresno State's Derek Carr and Eastern Illiois' Jimmy Garoppolo as two to watch out for.
