It's been a week since Black Monday, yet no word has come down from Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross regarding the status of GM Jeff Ireland, coach Joe Philbin or his staff. However, it sounds like Ireland may be safe.
"Against all odds, I am hearing Jeff Ireland may stay on as Dolphins GM," tweeted Michael Silver NFL.com.
If this turns out to be the case, Dolphins fans may be up in arms about it. We noted Sunday how his offseason decisions at linebacker backfired. There also is the matter of a disastrous offensive line that gave up a league-high 58 sacks. So, yes, if Ireland keeps his job, it would be against all odds.
As for Philbin, ESPN Fins reporter James Walker thinks that the coach likely will stick:
"Ross likes Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin and wants him to succeed. Ross put a lot of work, time, and resources into a head-coaching search two years ago. The sense I get is Ross doesn’t want to go through that extensive process again this month. I expect Philbin to be safe. But other members of Miami’s staff like offensive coordinator Mike Sherman and offensive line coach Jim Turner should be very nervous. Someone has to take the fall and I don’t expect them to survive."
