Veteran New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma will start the season on injured reserve with a designation to return. Vilma, who has struggled with knee problems in his career, had knee surgery in August. The designation means the injured defensive leader can return to practice after Week 6 and to game action after Week 8. The short-term IR designation also means sixth-year player David Hawthorne will start at inside linebacker alongside Curtis Lofton in the Saints first game against the Atlanta Falcons Sunday. What can be expected of Hawthorne?
