UPDATE: Per Brian Costello of the New York Post, "An organizational source said many people around the [Jets] believe the mercurial wide receiver [Santonio Holmes] is just trying to avoid training camp and he is healthier than he is letting on. In fact, a source said Dr. Robert Anderson, the foot specialist in North Carolina who operated on Holmes, has cleared Holmes to begin football activities, but Holmes has resisted."
This isn't the first time we've heard rumors to this effect. Holmes is in a contract year and may be more concerned with his long-term health and production than getting on the field as soon as possible. Only Holmes knows for certain. We'll have a better read on the team's expectations once they decide whether to leave Holmes on the PUP list for the start of the season.
The clock continues to tick on Santonio Holmes and his recovery from last year's serious Lisfranc injury. His status for the beginning of the regular season remains up in the air, and he clearly is not anywhere near 100 percent.
