"[Randle] must play well in the preseason to fend off Ryan Williams because the Cowboys probably aren't keeping four running backs," noted ESPN Cowboys reporter Jean-Jacques Taylor.
Does Randle or Williams have an edge in the competition?
"Randle's vision and quick feet give him an edge, to me, in this system," wrote ESPN Cowboys reporter Todd Archer. "He makes it to the hole quicker than Ryan Williams, who is built a little more powerfully. Both players will have to work on pass protection."
As often is the case with players on the roster bubble, special-teams skills likely will come into play, which could put Williams even further behind Randle.
"RB Ryan Williams is a longshot to make the Cowboys’ final roster because he’s not a good special teams player," Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News wrote. "If you’re going to be a reserve player in the NFL, you better be able to contribute on special teams. Otherwise, a team can’t afford to keep you."
The Dallas Cowboys RB depth chart is topped by DeMarco Murray and Lance Dunbar, which leaves Joseph Randle and Ryan Williams battling it out for what likely will be one roster spot.
