How far will Max Bullough fall?

3/27/2014

Alabama's C.J. Mosley is the only inside linebacker projected as a first-rounder (8th) by Scouts, Inc., though Wisconsin's Chris Borland is ranked 35th overall. After that pair of ILBs, there is a big drop off to Stanford's Shayne Skov (130th) and Louisville's Preston Brown (137th). Then there are players like Michigan State's Max Bullough, who has potential but plenty of question marks.

Those concerns include his suspension for the Rose Bowl and the fact that he came in 20 pounds over his listed weight of 245 pounds when he took part in the East-West Shrine Game. Apparently, the concerns don't stop there, though.

"I've talked with a number of personnel execs about Bullough and can't find a lot of enthusiasm for him. He played well as a junior but his play dipped so badly as a senior that one said he has close to a free agent grade on him," noted NFL columnist Dan Pompei.

"Bullough gained weight last year and was suspended for violating team rules. Bullough also might be just a first and second down player. He is big and instinctive, and he worked out well at the combine. So he might be worth taking a flyer on. But I wouldn't think he'll be drafted high, and I wouldn't think a team would pick him with the thought that he will be a starter quickly."

At this time, it looks like we won't hear Bullough's name called until the latter rounds of the draft.

"Bullough will need to lose around 20 pounds to play in a 3-4," ESPN Redskins reporter John Keim wrote last month. "As of now, it sounds as if he’s a guy you’d pick in the fifth round or later."
