Football Recruiting - West Region: 2013 New Level Athletics 7on7 West Regional

Wide receiver Erik Brown (Fontana, Calif./Summit) collected two offers last week, but it was a standout performance at last weekend's NLA 7-on-7 Las Vegas that really put him on the map.

Leading up to the event, Brown picked up his first two offers in the span of a few hours.

2015 running back Osa Masina (Salt Lake City/Brighton) is very familiar with the recruiting process. His older brother, Uaea Masina, signed with Utah as part of the 2013 recruiting class, and the younger Masina already holds offer from BYU, Michigan, Utah and Wisconsin.

His most recent offer, from the Wolverines, caught him off guard.

Peoria (Ariz.) Centennial fans hoping to get a glimpse of what their new safety tandem is capable of got a chance to do just that this past weekend at the NLA 7-on-7 tournament in Las Vegas. Playing for "Those Guys", Amare Burks and Dominic Cochrane were terrific in the secondary and accounted for a handful of interceptions throughout the weekend.

By now, recruiting fans in the West are plenty familiar with Gardena (Calif.) Serra standouts Adoree' Jackson and Dwight Williams, who have 44 offers between them. But that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to recruits at Serra.

As a cornerback, Shawn Franklin (Chandler, Ariz./Chandler) might spend a lot of time backpeddling, but everything the 5-foot-11, 155-pound athlete is doing this offseason is designed to move him forward.

In the 2009 recruiting class, the Valley Center (Calif.) Jaguars produced James Johnson, who set a San Diego Section record for receiving yards in a career before signing with the Washington Huskies. In the 2014 class, the Jaguars have another dynamic two-way playmaker in Anthony Ricks.

DonYeh Patterson (Compton, Calif./Dominguez) hasn't grown much since he was in ninth grade, but that hasn't stopped him from making an impact on the football field. He's simply moved farther away from the ball.

He's not undersized by any means, but he was a defensive tackle as a high school freshman. But instead of growing into a lineman, the 6-foot-2, 195-pound Patterson slid to defensive end as a sophomore, and now wide receiver as a junior.

"I liked d-tackle; it was cool," Patterson said. "But it's way more fun playing receiver. I like getting the ball."

Before this past weekend, Harris Ross (Pittsburg, Calif./Pittsburg) had never participated in a 7-on-7 tournament or toured a college campus. But the 5-foot-11, 195-pound tailback crossed both items off his list with a trip to Las Vegas, for the NLA 7-on-7 tournament.

Ross not only took part, he helped his AIGA team to the title, as he caught a number of passes out of the backfield and picked up yards on the ground.

If this past weekend is any indication, Luke Rubenzer (Scottsdale, Ariz./Saguaro) is going to be a name heard quite frequently during the 7-on-7 season. The 6-foot, 180-pound quarterback shared duties for a loaded Arizona squad that came out firing at the NLA 7-on-7 Las Vegas.

With high school teammate Christian Kirk (Scottsdale, Ariz./Saguaro), to go along with standout receivers Tyler Whiley (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) and Jalen Brown (Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain Pointe), Rubenzer had a loaded group of receivers to work with. And when Brown returns from a shoulder injury he suffered early on in the tournament, this team will certainly be heard from again in future tournaments.

"It's a blast," Rubenzer said of playing with such a talented group. "I'm used to having Christian to work with, but when you throw in the other guys, it's just a blast. This is the most fun I've ever had."

Linebackers are often overlooked in 7-on-7 play, as so much attention is placed on the matchups between offensive skill players and defensive backs. But at the NLA 7-on-7 West regional in Las Vegas on the weekend, middle linebacker Chandler Leniu (Bellflower, Calif./St. John Bosco) led AIGA to the tournament title as the anchor of one of the top defenses in attendance.

After riding a young but talented defense to a CIF title last season, Long Beach (Calif.) Poly didn't need any additional help on that side of the ball heading into this season. But it looks like that's exactly what the Jackrabbits will get, in the form of cornerback Demetric Woodard Jr., who transferred in February from Anaheim (Calif.) Servite.

The Arizona-based "Those Guys" team didn't come away with the championship at the Las Vegas NLA 7-on-7 over the weekend, but for tight end Trevor Wood (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral), just getting out on a football field was victory enough.

Several 2015 recruits made statements at last weekend's NLA 7-on-7 in Las Vegas, and Christian Kirk (Scottsdale, Ariz./Saguaro) belongs on any list of standout underclassmen.

The dynamic two-way threat starred on both sides of the ball for a very talented team comprised of some of Arizona’s top players.

Many high-profile recruits will say they like to do their talking on the field, rather than off it, but few carry out that practice as well as Tyler Luatua (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada). The physically-gifted 6-foot-4, 230-pound tight end would seemingly rather take a blindside hit from a safety than a softball question from the media, though it has far more to do with his quiet, understated nature than any desire to keep his distance from anybody.

It's possible that few players helped their stock more than Tyler Whiley (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) during this past weekend's NLA 7-on-7 tournament in Las Vegas.
