Hailing from a town mostly known as golf destination -- and the furthest thing from a football hotbed -- has led one of the more surprising players in attendance at the 2012 Cal-State Game to fly about as far under the radar as possible.
It wasn't just the fact that safety Michael Greer (Palm Springs, Calif./Palm Springs) was from a resort town in the desert of California that kept him out of the headlines. Greer also had only a 1.7 GPA after his sophomore year.
After dedicating himself to hitting the books, Greer has seen his interest increase dramatically.

The top cornerback at the 2012 Cal-State Game in Visalia, Calif., has been as advertised during the South team's practices this week.
ESPN 150 CB Chris Hawkins (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) has been a USC commit since April, but that hasn't stopped him from taking other visits and talking to other schools.
While there have been visits taken and rumors floating around for months, the No. 11 CB in the nation is still solid with the Trojans. Previous visits to Cal, Notre Dame and Washington did nothing to dissuade Hawkins from sticking with his dream school.

After flying under-the-radar for most of his high school career, WR Jordan Villamin (Etiwanda, Calif./Etiwanda) landed offers from Utah and Oregon State earlier this year. A week ago he added an offer from Fresno State.
"They offered me and want me to come visit next month," said the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Vallamin. "I just haven't really seen many other places and want to get a feel for what else is out there."

One the of top wide receivers in the state, and the country, has been fantastic in practice this week at the Cal-State Game in Visalia, Calif.
ESPN 150 WR Sebastian LaRue (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica) has been among the top playmakers on either side this week. That dynamic play is why Texas A&M and Notre Dame are continuing their pursuit of the long-time USC commit.
"Yeah, I'm still good with 'SC. I just want to give those programs a chance to show me what they're all about," said LaRue. "In January, I'm going to visit both of them. I'll be in College Station on the 18th and then South Bend on the 25th."

One of the more intriguing recruiting story lines in the west is that of ESPN 300 OL Cameron Hunt (Corona, Calif./Centennial). While he is still committed to the Cal Bears, the Under Armour All-American has a busy January ahead.
"I have the Under Armour Game on January 4th, then the following week is when things get really hectic," Hunt said. "I'm going to Michigan on the 12th, Oregon on the 18th and Cal on the 25th. I'm going to visit Ohio State at some point to but I need to figure that one out."
Michigan, Nebraska and Oregon offered the 6-foot-4, 274-pound Hunt after Cal fired head coach Jeff Tedford. Urban Meyer made a trip to see Hunt at his school last week, and while no offer was extended, it appears that is just a matter of time.

VISALIA, Calif. -- One of the least talked about stars in this recruiting cycle has been DT Kenneth Clark (Rialto, Calif./Carter). The 6-foot-3, 280-pound run-stuffer dominated his competition all season, and he's doing it again in an all-star setting.
"I'm just trying to do my thing. I'm not too worried about anything else," Clark said. "I'm just here to compete and have some fun."
Clark was having plenty of fun during practice for the annual Cal-State Game, which pits the top high school seniors from Northern California against their counterparts from Southern California. Clark dominated Thursday's practice in preparation for Saturday's game at the College of the Sequoias. Fellow UCLA commit Alex Redmond (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos) said he is glad that they'll be wearing the same colors next year.
