Stanford extends offer to Oregon OLB
By Erik McKinney
With its combination of academics and athletics, Stanford is one of those programs that can turn heads with a spring scholarship offer in the West region. On Friday, the Cardinal made a statement when they set their sights on a West Coast linebacker.
Joey Alfieri (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) has heard plenty from the Pac-12, as Oregon State was his first offer last November, and Arizona, Arizona State, Washington and Washington State have followed suit. But the 6-foot-2, 215-pound linebacker's recruitment jumped up a notch Friday, when Stanford entered the mix.
"Getting the offer from Stanford was amazing," Alfieri said via text. "They are one of my top choices."
Alfieri said he spoke with five or six Cardinal coaches on Friday, and they told him he had an offer and they'd be pursuing him.
"Stanford has the whole package, with elite academics and an elite football program, as well as an amazing coaching staff and a great location in California," Alfieri said.
The linebacker hasn't thought about when he'd like to make a decision on a commitment, and there are several more events on his schedule before he even considers ending the process.
Alfieri will visit Stanford on June 18 for the Cardinal junior day and summer camp. He said he definitely wants that visit under his belt before he thinks about making a decision. He also will attend Oregon's camp this summer and said he could trip to Southern California and attend camps at UCLA and USC. He'll be a participant at the Nike Sparq Combine and Training Camp in Oregon in early June and is hoping to add an appearance at The Opening to his summer schedule.
