Plenty of reasons to like 2014 DE Garrett
By Damon Sayles
The Twitter account for Myles Garrett (Arlington, Texas/Martin) tells half truth.
Garrett’s bio reads, “The big silly guy who plays football? Yea thats me,” and those who know Garrett know he enjoys to laugh and joke around. What the Twitter page doesn’t tell is just how athletically gifted the ESPN Watch List defensive end is. In fact, in addition to being the silly guy, friends have a nickname for him that seems to fit.
Defensive end Myles Garrett says he has no favorites right now, but he is visiting Texas A&M soon.
“They call me Superman,” Garrett said. “I guess it’s cool. It makes me laugh.”
For starters, Garrett stands an intimidating 6-foot-5 and 247 pounds. Put him on the track, and he leaves jaw-dropping statistics. He’s run the 40-yard dash in 4.55 seconds.
Put him in the weight room, and Garrett’s even more impressive. He bench presses 400 pounds and squats 550. Additionally, Garrett has a 34-inch vertical.
Alabama and Texas Tech are the latest schools to recognize Garrett’s skills. He added those in with offers from Ohio State, Texas, Texas A&M, Michigan, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, TCU and several others.
“It lets me know I’m doing good work on the field and in the weight room,” Garrett said of the offers. “I’m working hard and will keep working hard through next season -- and after that.”
Garrett was an honorable-mention all-state selection as a junior, finishing with 66 tackles, nine sacks, an interception, a fumble recovery and a blocked field goal. Of those 66 tackles, 51 were solo tackles, and 17 went for losses.
Garrett said no school is considered a front-runner at the present time, but his only upcoming visit will be April 5 for Texas A&M’s “Friday Night Lights” scrimmage. Aside from that, Garrett will focus on spring football and is expected to compete in the Nike Football Training Camp in Allen, Texas, on April 7.
