Lockett adds an offer from Notre Dame
By Erik McKinney
Notre Dame looks to make an impact in California every year in recruiting. In the 2013 class, the Fighting Irish were extremely successful, pulling the nation's No. 2 athlete and No. 1 defensive tackle out of the Golden State in Max Redfield and Eddie Vanderdoes.
Notre Dame is again very active on the West Coast in the 2014 class, as offers have gone out to some of California's top players, including running back Joe Mixon (Oakley, Calif./Freedom), cornerback Adoree' Jackson (Gardena, Calif./Serra) and John Smith (Long Beach, Calif./Poly).
On Tuesday, Notre Dame sent out another offer to a California standout. This time it was cornerback Jonathan Lockett (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei).
Lockett said the offer didn't exactly catch him by surprise, but it was a welcome addition to a list that included Boise State, San Jose State and Washington.
"I've been getting letters and e-mails from the coach," Lockett said. "When he said to give me a call today, I was hoping it was an offer, because I'd already talked to him before to introduce myself. Once he said they'd like to offer me a scholarship, I was excited."
Lockett is as familiar with Notre Dame as a recruit who has never stepped foot on the campus can be. He said he's heard plenty about it from his head coach, Bruce Rollinson, whose daughter graduated from Notre Dame. And the Fighting Irish also recruited Lockett's former teammate, Thomas Duarte, during the last recruiting cycle. But with the offer, Lockett would like to see the school for himself, and is hoping to visit this summer, provided he can work something out with his parents.
As for the spring, Lockett will compete at the Los Angeles Nike Football Training Camp on Sunday, but will likely spend much of his time at Mater Dei, preparing for his senior season.
"I want to focus on spring ball right now," he said. "In the summer, I'll start to think about trips. I'll do camps at UCLA and USC, and I'll probably go to the Washington camp."
The Notre Dame offer could also be the start of a recruiting push for Lockett. He said both Oregon and Oregon State could be close to joining his offer sheet.
"My coach told me they are close to offering," Lockett said. "He said don't be surprised if they offer this week or next week."
