Four-star BYU LB flips to Cal

By Brandon P. Oliver

After surprising many with his strong performance at Nike's The Opening last summer, LB Johnny Ragin III (Wilsonville, Ore./Wilsonville) picked up interest from programs from the Northwest to the SEC. It took a while, but the offers finally came his way.

The 6-foot-3, 222-pound Ragin put an end to his recruitment on Wednesday night by announcing his commitment via twitter by tweeting, "I have decommitted from BYU and have officially committed to #Cal. Go Bears!"

After hearing from a number of schools like Auburn, BYU, Cal, Colorado, Oregon, Oregon State Portland State and Washington, Ragin’s first offer came from BYU in June. The in-state Beavers followed and Cal did the same on Dec. 4. Two days later Ragin committed to BYU. That same day, Cal named Sonny Dykes as its new head coach. Dykes quickly confirmed with Ragin that his offer was still good despite being offered by the old Cal staff and began to pursue Ragin.

"The atmosphere at Cal is great. There's a major emphasis on being a student athlete, which is something I value," Ragin said. "I'm excited to get down there, and get to work. I want to go in, work hard and earn everything I can. I'm looking forward to getting a chance to prove myself and help the squad."

Ragin III is the 26th commitment for the Bears for the 2013 class, and the ninth four-star player.
