On Sunday evening, the inaugural Unsung Heroes Awards recognized several outstanding Southern California student-athletes.
Honorees were chosen for their combination of success in the classroom, in the community and on the football field. Grade point average, community service, letters of recommendation and personal statements all factored into the process of selecting the nominees. They were celebrated by the Inner City Youth Foundation at Sunday night's event, An Evening of Champions.
Among those student-athlete honores were Nebraska commit Terrell Newby (West Hills, Calif./Chaminade), USC signee Chris Hawkins (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga), Tahaan Goodman (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga), Arizona commit Zachary Green (Ventura, Calif./St. Bonaventure), UCLA commit Mossi Johnson (Crenshaw, Calif./Crenshaw), Washington State commit Daquan Brown (Los Angeles/Dorsey), Cal commit Khalfani Muhammad (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Notre Dame), Keishawn Bierria (Harbor City, Calif./Narbonne), Max Lyons (Crenshaw, Calif./Crenshaw), Washington commit John Ross (Long Beach, Calif./Jordan), Washington commit Jermaine Kelly (Los Angeles/Salesien) and Sacramento State commit Jihad Vercher (Los Angeles/Salesien).
