Winston commits to SJSU, for now

12/13/2012

San Jose State didn't need a head coach to land one of California's top playmakers earlier this week, but the Spartans might need to come up with some stability at the position if they want to hold onto wide receiver Tyler Winston (Antelope, Calif./Antelope) through signing day.

Antelope head coach Matt Ray confirmed Winton's commitment to San Jose State, but said the 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior will keep his eyes and ears open throughout the remainder of the recruiting process.

"With the whole situation at San Jose State, with their head coach, he is still entertaining different schools," Ray said of Winston. "He is still very interested, but because they have no head coach right now, he wants to make sure that it ends up being someone he wants in order to go there."

Winston committed to the Spartans over a number of other offers. UCLA was the first school to offer the speedy receiver and Boise State was another big program to extend an offer, but Ray said both schools have filled their commitment allocations at the position they were recruiting Winston for.

Ray said Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, Northwestern and UNLV are schools that could still generate interest for Winston and get him on campus for an official visit. San Jose State will also likely receive an official visit once a head coach is named.

As a senior, Winston caught 57 passes for 876 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushed for 219 yards and two scores. Defensively, he recorded 39 tackles and three interceptions.
