It took the Idaho Vandals several days to bring Paul Petrino in as the newest head coach. It took a matter of moments for them to gain a commitment from running back Isaiah Saunders (Elk Grove, Calif./Pleasant Grove).
Saunders is the younger brother of Oklahoma standout receiver Jalen Saunders and the son of former Vandals wide receiver Walter Saunders. When the staff at Idaho extended Saunders an offer Wednesday morning, it didn't take long for the running back to become the newest member of the Vandals' 2013 recruiting class.
"They really talked to my dad during recruiting, because I was worried about school stuff," Saunders said. "On Wednesday morning, he told me they offered and I committed on the spot."
It's full circle for the Saunders family, as Walter played wide receiver while Petrino served on the Idaho staff. With Petrino the head coach now, his offensive system will certainly be employed.
"I really don't know what's going on with the coaching staff, but it doesn't bother me at all," Saunders said. "My dad went to Idaho and played under the same coach. He said that every year he was there, they had a running back rush for at least 1,200 yards."
Saunders will get his first look at Petrino in person on Sunday night, as the Idaho head coach will make an in-home visit. While he will certainly continue to recruit Saunders, the running back said he isn't worried about what happens between now and signing day.
"I'm set," he said. "Idaho is where I'm going."
Saunders rushed for 1,383 yards and 16 touchdowns during his senior season. He is commitment No. 6 for Idaho's 2013 recruiting class.
