ATH Darren Andrews makes the switch to UCLA

11/19/2012

The good news for UCLA continued into Sunday, as the Bruins big win over USC helped them land another commitment for the 2013 class. Athlete Darren Andrews (La Puente, Calif./Bishop Amat) had been committed to Duke, but a strong charge from the Bruins in recent weeks had the 5-foot-10, 162-pound two-way standout reconsidering things. On Sunday, after a night to sleep on UCLA's big win, Andrews decided the Bruins were the right choice.

"It was a hard decision, but I felt like it's where I need to be," Andrews said. "After the game I thought about it, but I didn't say anything to anybody. [Sunday] I made the call to Duke and to UCLA.

"I'm excited. I feel good and stress free. I'm feeling good about it."

Andrews said UCLA is recruiting him as a wide receiver, and he will likely push for playing time as a slot receiver. He took unofficial visits to UCLA's home games against Utah, Arizona and USC, but it was the most recent victory that made him feel comfortable enough to make the switch in his commitment.

"The game did help a lot," Andrews said. "I felt like I could play in that offense, and the atmosphere at the Rose Bowl was really good."

Andrews will continue with the recruiting process over the coming months. He has official visits scheduled to Houston on Nov. 30, Duke on Dec. 7 and UCLA on Dec. 14. He will also visit Washington State in early January. He is UCLA's 19th commitment in its 2013 recruiting class.
