Utah didn't come away with a victory when it hosted USC last Thursday, but the Utes did made a very positive impression on several official visitors. Cornerback Marcellus Pippins (El Cerrito, Calif./El Cerrito) saw enough during the trip to make a call to the Utah coaching staff on Wednesday.
"I called the coaches and told them I was committing to be a Utah Ute," Pippins said. "I felt very good about making my decision."
The 5-foot-9, 165-pound athlete visited Utah for his first official trip and raved about the experience.
"There was a lot of intensity with the packed house," Pippins said. "It was a lot of fun. I saw a lot of people and the coaches were really nice."
Pippins said the Utah coaches see him stepping in as a cornerback and contributing as a punt and kick returner as well. This season, Pippins is part of a loaded El Cerrito team off to a 7-0 start. The Gauchos have pitched two shutouts and allowed only 42 points all year.
While he is very comfortable with the commitment, Pippins said he will take additional visits in November, though he isn't yet sure of the destinations. He also holds offers from San Diego State, UCLA, UNLV, Utah State and Washington State. Pippins is commitment No. 19 for Utah in its 2013 recruiting class.
