During his junior season, Thompson rushed for 3,488 yards and 34 touchdowns. His game-by-game numbers are difficult to imagine.

He was held to fewer than 100 yards rushing just one time in 14 games. He surpassed the 200-yard mark on 11 occasions and rushed for 300 yards three times, including a performances against Las Lomas (Calif.) Walnut Creek where he piled up 457 yards and four touchdowns, as he averaged 19 yards per carry.
