WR Tanner Shipley decommits from BYU

7/26/2012

When Tanner Shipley landed a scholarship offer from BYU, he got caught up in the moment.

The 6-foot-2, 176-pound receiver (Wilsonville, Ore./Wilsonville) was on campus in Provo, Utah, and was so excited he committed immediately.

The more he thought about his future, though, the more he felt he still needed time to weigh his options. Almost a month after making his initial announcement, he decided to decommit Thursday.

“I jumped on it and kind of made a quick decision,” Shipley said. “All this time that I had thinking about it just made me think, ‘Why am I not looking at other schools?’”

Shipley said the Cougars are still right at the top of his list, but he is now also looking at Oregon State and Wyoming.

“I’ve got to make this decision with my family and really analyze it, because this is a life decision and I’ve got to do what’s right for me,” he said. “I just think it was too quick.”

As he prepared for his senior season, Shipley realized he was spending most of his time thinking about his verbal commitment. He wanted to focus more of his attention on his teammates.

“I’m just really excited for this senior year of football,” Shipley said. “I think that was a big reason, too. I wanted to focus on my team instead of the commitment being on my mind, wondering ‘Is this the right decision?’”
