OL Kirkland picks up Washington offer

7/1/2012

Andrew Kirkland tested his talent against some elite competition at Washington’s Rising Stars Camp Friday.

A few of the athletes the 6-foot-5, 297-pound offensive lineman (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) went head-to-head with spent their lunch breaks giving verbal commitments to the Huskies.

The announcements caught the attention of the other prospects at the camp, including Kirkland, who now has something to think about after Washington offered him a scholarship Saturday.

“It’s actually pretty cool, because I was going against those kids yesterday at the camp,” Kirkland said. “They were outstanding athletes. I matched up pretty well against them, and to see that caliber of kid coming to such an excellent school means a lot. It’s going to help me decide in the process.”

Washington is the second Pac-12 program to offer Kirkland, joining Colorado.

“It’s pretty close to home and I was just really excited, because it’s a great program,” he said. “I like it up here.”

While Kirkland was drawn in by the excitement surrounding Washington’s recent recruiting success, he won’t rush to commit.

“I’m still deciding,” he said. “I’m not going to make a decision until late January. I’m just really trying to enjoy the experience.”
