Before Friday, there weren’t many top programs that hadn’t offered defensive end Joe Mathis (Upland, Calif./Upland). Friday afternoon saw another college crossed off the list.
Mathis can now add the Crimson Tide to his impressive offer sheet, following a conversation with Alabama coach Nick Saban.
“It’s a great feeling,” Mathis said. “I was able to talk to Coach Saban on the phone, and he said he was real impressed with my film and wanted to offer me.”
Most schools have offered Mathis at defensive end, but the Tide join Tennessee as his two latest offers that see him as a linebacker. Mathis was at linebacker at last weekend’s 7-on-7 event in Las Vegas.
Mathis, 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, has talked about USC, Nebraska and Oklahoma as being three of his early favorites but said things are constantly changing. Mathis is expected to attend Nebraska’s spring game April 14.
“I want to see the campus and my coach really wants to see how things are there,” Mathis said. “I’m not in a rush, and I will see all the schools I feel I need to see before making a decision.”
Mathis will participate at the Nike Football Training Camp event Sunday in Los Angeles at Cerritos College. Mathis has nearly 30 offers.
