One of the big names on campus this past weekend was defensive tackle Aziz Shittu (Atwater, Calif./Buhach Colony). That position has become a big need for the Trojans in this class and Shittu would go a long way toward boosting the spot. Shittu was one of nine official visitors at USC, and received a very positive impression from the Trojans.
"He said he had a great time and it was awesome to see the tradition and history of the place," Buhach Colony head coach Kevin Swartwood said. "He thought it was a great trip."
Shittu has been notoriously intriguing when it comes to the recruiting process, using Facebook and Twitter to make comments about various schools to heighten suspense. Like the rest of us, Swartwood says he is often left in the dark as well.
"He is sly," Swartwood said of his outstanding lineman. "He's smart as a fox, and that's not in a negative way. He has a handle on this stuff and he's beyond his years. I truly don't think he's using the process -- I think he's enjoying it. He enjoys talking to people and learning and seeing new things."
Swartwood said the thing that stood out to Shittu most during his trip to USC were the new facilities being built, as well as the old tradition that permeates Heritage Hall.
"He talked about walking through the facilities and seeing the Heisman Trophies and national championship trophies," Swartwood said.
Shittu maintains that all four California Pac-12 schools remain high on his list, but the thought is that Stanford and USC have separated themselves from the pack. The Cardinal will be tough to beat -- he already committed there this past summer before decommitting, and he was recently accepted by Stanford admissions -- but it's difficult to discount USC defensive line coach Ed Orgeron when he sets his sights on a big time target.
Buhach Colony will have a signing day ceremony at 2 p.m. next Wednesday, when Shittu is scheduled to announce his college destination.
