Juco DT Lewis headed to the SEC

5/9/2013

Offensive guard Tony Feo announced his signing with the Oklahoma Sooners on Thursday, but he won’t be the only big man from Fullerton (Calif.) College headed across the country to play football this summer.

The Hornets will also send defensive tackle Melvin Lewis, all 6-foot-4 and 315 pounds of him, to Kentucky. Lewis held offers from Hawaii, Miami (Fla.) and Washington, but decided to take his time with the process and eventually signed with Kentucky on April 28.

The Wildcats initially made contact in late February and brought Lewis out on an official visit for their spring game April 12.

“It was a great experience,” Lewis said. “I really enjoyed myself and the fans were really supportive. I built a good relationship with the defensive line coach.”

Lewis added that one of the biggest selling points Kentucky offered was the SEC competition he could go against every week.

Though he only began playing football during his junior year of high school -- Lewis was a basketball player previously -- he came on strong out of Compton (Calif.) High School and made an impact early at Fullerton. Lewis will have three years to play two for Kentucky, but hopes to make another quick impact at his next stop.

“I can provide speed for run protection and they are lacking in run defense right now,” Lewis said. “I talked to the coach and he said I can immediately be an impact player.”

He becomes commitment No. 23 for Kentucky’s 2013 class.
