Lakewood (Calif.) wide receiver Darius Powe will take his first official visit this weekend. Could he join a current teammate in the Northwest?
Powe, No. 86 in the ESPNU 150, will head to Oregon State this week along with his good friend and teammate Malik Gilmore. Gilmore has already committed to the Beavs and has been recruiting Powe very hard since the summer.
“He’s on me every day,” Powe said. “He’s a big reason why I’m interested in Oregon State. He’s a good friend and it would be great to play with him in college. Right now, I’m very high on Oregon State, they’re probably recruiting me harder than anyone.
“This is my first visit so I’m really hyped to get out there and see what the school is all about. I’ve been in Oregon before but have never seen Oregon State so I’m very excited. They have a great coaching staff that I’m comfortable with and the football program is always competitive and has had some big wins over the years.”
Michigan, UCLA and Utah are the other schools on Powe’s short list.
“I have a visit set with Utah for December,” Powe said. “I don’t remember the exact date but I think it might be (Dec. 9). I hope to visit UCLA and Michigan too but I don’t have anything planned. Right now, my main focus is on our first-round playoff game this weekend against San Clemente (Calif.).
“It’s the Fox game of the week so we’re excited to be on TV and I think we’re ready to play a great game. San Clemente is a good team and has some good players but I like our chances, I think our team is playing pretty well right now.”
