Chans Cox is all in with Arizona State

10/29/2012

It's safe to say that athlete Chans Cox (Lakeside, Ariz./Blue Ridge) is buying what the Arizona State coaching staff is selling. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound two-way standout jumped at the chance to join the 2013 recruiting class for the hometown Sun Devils and has raved about every experience with head coach Todd Graham and the rest of the staff. Over the weekend, he took his official visit to Arizona State. The result was more of the same.

"It was awesome," Cox said of his time at Arizona State. "The game was really exciting towards the end, but obviously it would have been better if they won. After that, we got to go to dinner with Coach Graham and got to spend a lot of time talking to him."

Cox was joined by fellow official visitors Tre Flowers (Converse, Tex./Judson) -- another Arizona State verbal commitment -- and Tatum Taylor (Seattle/O'Dea). But perhaps more importantly for Cox, a long list of unofficial visitors, including plenty of Sun Devils' commitments, were in attendance.

"I got to say hi to Grant Martinez and Nick Brown, and Josh Dobbs came out with his mom," Cox said. "It was really nice to finally see him in person, because we've been keeping in touch over the phone."

With Cox leading the way, he said Arizona State's class seems to be strengthening as the year progresses, with a big boost from this past weekend.

"I'm totally committed to Arizona State and the rest of the guys are, too," Cox said. "We're really looking forward to making a difference there, with Coach Graham installing great discipline and looking for kids that have high character. Being an in-state guy, that's big for me."

Cox, who plans to enroll early, had an opportunity to sit down with the academic staff and make sure his academic situation was in order. He had a chance to do that from a football point of view as well, as he spoke with the coaches about his future at middle linebacker.

"The defense is real strong," Cox said. "The position I'll be playing is one where I can move to the middle or outside with a lot of pass rushing and blitzing. They're excited to use me because of my speed and length. I'm already taller than any linebacker they have right now, so they're excited for me to get down there."
