Cali QBs pick up recent offers

11/1/2011

Two of the top uncommitted quarterbacks out west each picked up recent scholarship offers.

Tyler Stewart (Chatsworth, Calif./Sierra Canyon) landed his second scholarship offer earlier this month from Fresno State. San Jose State had previously offered the talented signal caller.

“That’s a great offer and I’m very excited about it,” Stewart said. “I talked to Pat Hill on the phone and he told me they were offering me. Coach Hill is a great guy and a great coach as well and I have a visit planned for (Jan. 20). I also have a visit set with San Jose State (Dec. 9) but we could still be playing in the playoffs so there’s a chance I may have to move it if we are.”

Sierra Canyon is off to an 8-0 start and ranked No. 1 in the state in Div IV. Stewart has completed 74-111 passes for 1,259 yards and 24 touchdowns with just one interception.

“We’re just taking things one game at a time,” Stewart said. “I know that’s a cliché but that’s what we’re doing right now. It’s a huge goal of ours to win CIF and then play for a state title and we’re on track right now, we control our own destiny. At the same time, we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, that’s when top ranked teams fall and we definitely don’t want that.”

Stewart said UCLA and Nevada continue to talk with him from time to time but San Jose State and Fresno State are definitely recruiting him the hardest.

Malik Watson (Pittsburg, Calif./Pittsburg) received his first FBS scholarship in the last week from Idaho.

“It feels awesome to have this first offer under my belt,” Watson said. “Northern Arizona offered me in the spring but they’re Div. I-AA so this one is pretty big for me. I’ve been working so hard for this and just hoping one school would jump on me. Idaho has been recruiting me pretty hard and hinting at an offer and I definitely plan to visit.

“I would like to visit every school that offers me but right now, that’s just Idaho. You only go through the recruiting process one time so I want to enjoy it. Hopefully this offer will trigger a few other schools to jump up and offer as well. Right now, I’m just focusing on our season and working as hard as I can to help our team to win.”
