Inglewood (Calif.) defensive back Devian Shelton was an early commitment to Arizona but is open to other schools and might go in a different direction rather than wait to see who the new Wildcats coach will be.
“It’s a tough situation,” Shelton said. “I do want to see who Arizona hires, but at the same time, I don’t want to wait too long and not have a fall-back option. A new staff could come in and decide that they don’t want to recruit me and then I’ll be stuck, so I have to cover bases and look at other schools right now.
“I have a trip lined up with Oregon State for [Nov. 18] when they play Washington. I really like coach [Keith] Heyward, the DB coach over there, a lot, and we talk at least once a week. Arizona State is another school that offered me early that I stay in touch with, and I’m talking with USC, UCLA, San Diego State, Utah and a few others.”
Shelton said he’s still interested in Arizona and hopes the Cats are still an option for him when a new staff is brought in.
“If they want me, I’m definitely interested,” Shelton said. “I haven’t talked to the DB coach, Ryan Walters, in a long time, though. And I understand that. They have their season to focus on, and then obviously with assistant coaches, you never know if you’re going to be retained.
“I’ve talked to their recruiting coordinator who said to hang with them and see what happens. My plan is to just open things up and let schools know that I’m out there right now. I’ve had a good senior season and my coaches are getting my film out. If I find the right fit, I’ll definitely jump on it. Like I said, I don’t want to risk saying no to someone I like and then having Arizona not recruit me. I’m just going to play it by ear and see what happens and hopefully everything works out for the best.”
