Jalen Ortiz raves about UCLA visit

9/11/2012

Cornerback Jalen Ortiz (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) took his first official visit this past weekend and it could prove tough to beat. The 5-foot-9, 167-pound two-way threat was on hand for UCLA's win over Nebraska and came away impressed with the Bruins.

"Obviously it was a good game and the fans were going crazy," Ortiz said. "It was intense and that was great to see. I felt really comfortable there. It was my third trip down there, but it was probably better than I expected."

Ortiz was hosted on his visit by running back Paul Perkins, another Arizona athlete and someone Ortiz already knew. He also had a chance to speak at length with Y receivers coach Marques Tuiasosopo, as UCLA is one school in particular that sees Ortiz coming in to help on the offensive side of the ball.

The athlete was one of two players on an official visit last weekend, as the Bruins received a commitment from offensive tackle Kenny Lacy (Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain Pointe). Ortiz said the possibility of committing came up in discussions between the two during the trip.

"We talked about it, but I want to take other officials and give other schools a chance," Ortiz said. "He felt he was ready to commit and that's a good choice for him."

Ortiz will take official visits to Utah on Sept. 14, Washington on Oct. 12 and Boise State on Nov. 2, and those schools will need to match what he saw at UCLA.

"I have to make sure to weight the pros and cons of every visit and not just go off of my latest visit," Ortiz said. "But they'll (UCLA) definitely be one of the schools I'll be deciding between at the end."
