Things are happening fairly quickly for offensive lineman Spencer Ueli-Fa’atoalia (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada). The 6-foot-3, 295-pound guard transferred to La Mirada from Lakewood (Calif.) after his family moved and the big lineman was faced with the challenge of acclimating to a new school and team for his senior season, as well as jumping into the recruiting process.
His highlight tape was sent out in July, and fewer than two months later, Ueli-Fa’atoalia has already seen the results. Alabama State, Hawaii, Nevada and New Mexico State extended scholarship offers, with several other programs showing interest.
“All the other have come in since I got here and I’m really grateful for that,” Ueli-Fa’atoalia said of the transfer. “The move was kind of hard, but it went smoothly. They were really welcoming.”
The lineman said Hawaii stands out the most among his offers at this time, but he won’t rush into a decision. Ueli-Fa’atoalia would like to announce on signing day and said he will remain open to any school until then.
“Right now I’m just focused on the season and my senior year of school,” he said. “I’m going to try to fit in visits wherever space is possible, but I’m focused on school first.”
Last season, La Mirada dropped four of its first five games before running off a seven-game winning streak and ultimately falling in the third round of the playoffs. This season, the Matadors have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball, but things will likely start up front, where Ueli-Fa’atoalia will play a big part.
“Being a senior, I have to be a leader on the line,” he said. “If we’re slacking, we have to pick our team up. We’re here to help each other. We have to perfect everything and be a disciplined team.”
La Mirada begins its season this Friday when it hosts Santa Fe Springs (Calif.) St. Paul.
