LB Sean Barton commits to Stanford

8/6/2012

Sean Barton took to Twitter Sunday evening to make an announcement.

After posting a picture of three hats – Stanford, Utah and Washington – the 6-foot-3, 220-pound linebacker (Woods Cross, Utah./Woods Cross) later sent out another message that read, "Thanks to all my friends and family and coaches! I've committed to play at Stanford!"

"It just felt right," said Barton, when reached by phone. "I love the coaches and I really get along with the players really well."

While Stanford felt right, Barton said it was difficult to rule out Utah and Washington.

"It was really tough," Barton said. "Coach (Peter) Sirmon, the guy who was recruiting me at Washington, he's probably one of my favorite guys of all time. He's an awesome guy. And then, of course, with Utah it's hard to say no to the hometown team. Growing up a Utah fan, it was hard."

Barton is the seventh player the Cardinal has secured for its 2013 class. He is the fourth linebacker to give Stanford a verbal commitment, joining Peter Kalambayi (Matthews, N.C./David W. Butler), Doug Randolph (Woodberry Forest, Va./Woodberry Forest School) and Isaac Savaiinaea (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou).

"They've brought in some crazy guys the past few years," Barton said. "They've been getting great recruiting classes lately and I'm just glad I can be part of it."

As a junior last season, Barton had 120 tackles and six interceptions.

"It was a long process," Barton said. "I started getting recruiting my sophomore year and it's really never cooled down since. It's always gotten more and more intense. It's a long process, but it's a good problem to have. It's been awesome. It's been a blessing for sure."
