For Elijah Qualls, the recruiting process didn’t stop when he gave a verbal commitment to Washington last week.
After he helped orchestrate a seven-player commitment event during the Huskies’ Rising Stars Camp, the 6-foot-1, 285-pound defensive lineman (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande) is now trying to see if he can help land a few more recruits at The Opening.
“I want to get great players to play with,” Qualls said. “Until we get all our scholarships filled out, I’m going to keep recruiting. I’m asking around, seeing where players are. If there are a couple of uncommitted people, I’m going to see where they are.”
While he won’t hesitate to recruit a player or two to join him in Seattle, Qualls stressed that he isn’t going for the hard sell.
“I’m not going to pressure anyone to go to Washington,” he said. “You can’t really go wrong with picking any college. I’m just going to tell them what Washington has to offer, why I chose it and if they feel that, good.”
A week after he announced he was heading to Washington with Damore’ea Stringfellow (Moreno Valley, Calif./Rancho Verde) – who is also at The Opening – Poasi Moala (Moreno Valley, Calif./Rancho Verde), Lavon Coleman (Lompoc, Calif./Lompoc), Andrew Basham (Lynwood, Wash./Lynwood), Caleb Tucker (Monroe, La./Ouachita Parish) and Daeshon Hall (Lancaster, Tex./Lancaster), Qualls arrived in Oregon, and was still stressing the camaraderie he wants to bring to Washington.
“I want to be next to great players and have a good team, because I know, by me going somewhere, it’s not going change a whole program,” Qualls said. “Maybe a little bit, but not the whole thing. I want great players to come to my school with me. That way we have a chance of getting that championship.”
