QB Max Browne ready for The Opening

7/3/2012

Two days before heading to the Nike World Headquarters in Oregon, Max Browne (Sammamish, Wash./Skyline) was face down on the field with his teammates.

At the sound of a whistle, the 6-foot-5, 214-pound quarterback was on his feet, sprinting over a series of obstacles during a conditioning drill.

During a water break, he talked about his upcoming trip to The Opening, where he will be one of six quarterbacks competing among the nation’s top prospects.

“It’s a huge honor, especially when they only invite about six quarterbacks,” said Browne, who gave a verbal commitment to USC in April. “Between all 50 states and all the quarterbacks out there, it’s a huge honor.”

After watching the event on TV last year, Browne made earning an invitation one of his goals.

“I kind of got exposed to it and was really pumped when I got the invite,” said Browne, who threw for 4,034 yards and 45 touchdowns as a junior last season. “For quarterbacks, it kind of gets overshadowed, because we already have the Elite 11 deal, but I’m super excited. It’s going to be a good time.”

Rated the No. 2 quarterback in the country, Browne is the only representative from Washington making the trip to Oregon for the four-day event.

“I went to the Rivals deal and [Danny] Mattingly (Spokane, Wash./Mead) was there, but I don’t believe he’s going,” Browne said. “It will be fun. I’m representing Skyline. I’m representing the Northwest and the state of Washington.”
