USC cornerback commitment Chris Hawkins (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) was able to witness several practices at USC this spring. But Wednesday, Hawkins had his first opportunity to take the field for the Trojans coaching staff as he participated in the morning session of the Rising Stars Camp.
"I was trying to get a feel for how coach [Marvin] Sanders coaches and I got the feel that I wanted," Hawkins said. "It was really exciting. He keeps it energetic and I had a good time with him the whole day."
It's likely that part of the reason Sanders was so energetic was the plays made by Hawkins. The 5-foot-11, 159-pound cornerback said he intercepted three passes and had just two completions thrown against him all day. Hawkins said tight end Thomas Duarte (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) gave him the most trouble and caught both passes.
And while Hawkins didn't do any recruiting for the Trojans, he did have a chance to spend time with USC target Jalen Ramsey (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) off the field and linebacker Michael Hutchings (Concord, Calif./De La Salle) on it.
"Me and Michael Hutchings were on the same 11-on-11 team and we worked well together," Hawkins said. "We had a real good connection."
The next stop for Hawkins will be The Opening next week, which will conclude his summer football camps and visits.
