Davonte Neal (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) took his fourth official visit this past weekend to North Carolina. The athlete will now take the next week and try and cut down his list to two before taking his last visit.
“I had another great visit, they have all been great so far,” Neal said. “I really like the coaching staff there and Coach [Larry] Fedora is a great guy and a lot of fun to be around. As a whole, that staff is very high energy and talked a lot about their goal of winning a national championship. I liked their attitude and how they said they want to use me.
“They said they want me at receiver, returning punts, kicks and playing on defense too in the nickel package. They’re the only ones along with Arizona that have talked to me about playing both ways. They said they want the ball in my hands and if I sign there, they said the plan is for me to return the opening kickoff of the season so they got me pretty excited.”
Neal said despite not knowing a single person on the visit, he enjoyed his time with the players and other recruits.
“This was the first trip where I didn’t know any of the recruits or any of the guys on the team,” Neal said. “I still had fun with everyone, the guys treated me great. I heard about Franklin St. and that’s a cool place. We ate at some great places and the guys showed me around and I had a great time.
“I had to leave on Sunday so I didn’t get to stay for the basketball game. I heard the arena goes crazy and we did visit there and we all got to meet coach [Roy] Williams and that was really cool. So overall, another good visit and now it’s decision time. I’m going to take this week off and just focus on those four visits, UNC, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Arkansas. Hopefully I can cut it down to one or two and then I’ll be ready to go.”
Neal is still planning to visit Arizona (Feb. 10) but is listening to a last minute pitch from Oklahoma as well.
“Coach [Tim] Kish from Oklahoma came in for a visit last week,” Neal said. “I’m willing to listen to them, they have a great program. I haven’t talked to Coach [Bob] Stoops yet and don’t know if he plans to come in for a home visit or not. Right now, I’m visiting Arizona, that’s set in stone and I’m looking forward to that trip.”
