Inglewood (Calif.) defensive back Devian Shelton has seen his stock absolutely blow up in the last two weeks. The Oregon State commit was offered Wednesday by a powerhouse program from the SEC and will trip to another heavyweight program in the Big Ten this weekend.
Shelton committed just a few weeks ago to Oregon State but said he still wanted to take a few more trips and will head out to Nebraska this weekend.
“I just set up Nebraska early this week,” Shelton said. “I like Nebraska a lot, they have great tradition, are known for their defense and have had a lot of success putting their corners in the league (NFL). I think my style of play fits what they do. They play fast and aggressive, a lot of man to man and that’s how I love to play.
“I also set up a visit with Tennessee and that offer kind of came out of nowhere. I never heard from them at all and then the DB coach called Wednesday and said they were offering me and wanted me to come up for a visit. So I’m going there (Jan. 20) and excited to learn more about them. I really don’t know a lot since they never recruited me but I know they’re in the SEC and are a big-time school so I’m really excited.”
Shelton’s commitment to the Beavers will be interesting to follow. The athlete said he remains a solid verbal but late Wednesday night, news broke that Beaver DB coach Keith Heyward was on the verge of taking the DB job at Washington.
Not only could this hurt Oregon State but you can now expect the Huskies to make a strong push. UCLA, Shelton’s childhood favorite, is also now pursuing him after losing out on Kevon Seymour (Pasadena, Calif./John Muir) to USC. It’s definitely shaping up to be a wild final three weeks in Shelton’s recruitment.
