Final visit for Armstead, could announce Sunday

1/11/2012

Things are starting to wind down for two-way lineman Arik Armstead (Elk Grove, Calif./Pleasant Grove). The athlete will take one last visit this weekend and could make his decision as soon as Sunday.

“I’m going to Auburn,” Armstead said. “Me and my brother Armond are both visiting, and we leave Thursday, and we’ll be back home on Saturday. Right now, the plan is to make my decision as early as Sunday, but I could also wait and do it on Monday.

“I’m planning to enroll early, and some of the schools start next Monday and others on Tuesday so I want to decide pretty soon. I don’t have any big elaborate plans on how I’m announcing, but I think we might just do it at my church on Sunday if we can. Otherwise, I’ll just call up the schools and let them know.”

Armstead has already visited Notre Dame, Cal, Oregon and Alabama and said he’s still considering all but the Tide at this point. The opportunity to play with his older brother Armond, who has graduated from USC and can play immediately next fall, throws an interesting wrinkle into this recruitment.

“It would be very special to play with Armond,” Armstead said. “That’s my big brother, and it would be a dream come true to play with him. Right now, I know he’s looking at Notre Dame, Arkansas and Auburn, too, obviously. We’re still trying to figure out if he can play in the Pac-12 next year and what kind of waiver he needs, but for now, he’s just looking at non-Pac-12 schools.

“It’s going to be a tough decision, and it’s something I’ve thought long and hard about with my family already. Right now, I like Cal a lot, but I also really like Notre Dame and Oregon, too. I haven’t seen Auburn yet, but I’m looking forward to this trip and seeing how we both fit in.”
