Armstead still looking at three

1/6/2012

There has been a lot of speculation as to exactly who will be announcing their college choice at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Saturday. Arik Armstead (Elk Grove, Calif./Pleasant Grove) was one player rumored to announce, but that won’t happen this weekend.

There has been a lot of buzz during the Army practices that Armstead, along with several other players, could all announce to Cal together. Shaq Thompson (Sacramento, Calif./Grant) and Jordan Payton (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian) announced on Friday via tweeter and rumor had Armstead doing the same Saturday.

“No, he’s not ready yet,” said Gus Armstead, Arik’s father. “I know there has been a lot crazy talk going on this past week, but I think it’s mostly been in fun. Some of these kids are really enjoying playing with the media and getting some attention but right now, Arik still has one more visit to take and hasn’t decided where he’s going yet.

“Cal and Oregon are right at the top and both schools offer some unique things. With Cal, the 3-4 scheme really fits him well and we like Tosh [Lupoi] a lot. It’s close to home and we like the basketball program. With Oregon, they’re a great program with a lot to sell and we like how Arik fits in with their defense as well. They’re both great schools and we still have some more talking to do.”

Along with the Ducks and Bears, Armstead said they’re still considering Notre Dame and Auburn.

“We want to trip to Auburn still,” Gus Armstead said. “We feel we owe it to them for how hard they have been recruiting Arik this whole year. Notre Dame is another good fit and Coach [Brian] Kelly has been really good with us. He’s adamant that Arik won’t be playing on the offensive line and said they have a spot for him at defensive end if he earns it.

“We don’t have a set timeframe on when he’ll announce his decision but he still plans to enroll early. I know there has been a lot of speculation about him and Armond being a package deal, but we don’t know what Armond is going to do right now and that isn’t playing a role in what Arik does. Arik is going to pick the best school for him and that’s what we’re still trying to figure out.”
