ASU checks in with Smith and Rowe

1/5/2012

Arizona State hit the road Wednesday and made home visits with several prospects, including Long Beach Poly (Calif.) standouts Richard Smith, a receiver, and Matt Rowe, an outside linebacker.

Smith and Rowe are in a similar position in that both players are essentially down to the Sun Devils and UCLA, although Oregon State is making a late run at Smith. New Bruins running back coach Steve Broussard recruited both players to ASU when he was the Sun Devils receivers coach last year.

“Coach [Mike] Norvell and Coach [Delvaughn] Alexander came by for about two hours,” Smith said. “It was a great visit, and I really liked what they had to say. They didn’t just talk football. They talked about the family environment they’re trying to instill there. They talked a lot about academics and the kind of support I would get as far as tutoring.

“From a football standpoint, they talked about the kind of offense they want to instill and how they see me fitting in. It all sounds really good, and I’m excited to take my visit out there (Jan. 20). I think all five of us from Poly will be on that visit, so that should be good.”

Smith said he also recently talked with UCLA coach Jim Mora, and the Bruins remain an option.

“It was cool, he called to introduce himself and said I still have an offer,” Smith said. “They said I could come up and visit anytime, so I think I’ll definitely do that. I also had a home visit with Coach [Brent] Brennan from Oregon State this morning, and that went really well.

“He’s a super cool guy, and I’m going to visit Oregon State (Jan. 27). I don’t know as much about Oregon State as the other schools, but that’s what the visit is for. After that trip, I’ll be ready to make my decision, or I could wait until signing day.”

Rowe was visited by ASU defensive coordinator Chris Ball on Wednesday night.

“It was a good visit,” Rowe said. “He seemed cool, and it sounds like he knows what he’s talking about. He said they plan to run a 3-4 scheme, and they like me as an outside linebacker in that role. I think that’s a good fit for me, and I think I could have a chance to come in and play early if I’m ready. I need to get bigger and stronger, but I’m working on it.

“I’m going to visit there on (Jan. 20), and right now, that’s the only visit I have set up. ASU is definitely recruiting me the hardest right now, and I’m not hearing that much from any other schools. I talked with [Steve] Broussard at UCLA, and he said Coach Mora was going to call me this week, so we’ll see if that happens. I would visit there too if they offer it to me, but I’m still waiting to talk more with them about it.”
