Adams pulls recruiting shocker

12/26/2011

Ishmael Adams (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian) made his college choice on Monday and it has to be considered one of the biggest recruiting surprises of the year.

“I just committed to UCLA,” Adams said. “I prayed about this decision really hard and made a pros and cons list for both schools. When I weighed everything against each other, UCLA came out on top. Academically, I like what UCLA offers, the proximity to home was important and the biggest thing was being able to be a part of changing a program around versus just being a part of a program.

“It was nothing against Cal. I liked them a lot and was set to announce for them at the Army game. I almost announced there at GridIron Kings in the summer but UCLA was always in my head. After the coaching change, I didn’t think much about UCLA, but I really like Coach Mora a lot and I like Demetrice Martin a lot as well. He’s a good coach, and I know he’ll make me better.”

Adams also visited Notre Dame and Arizona State, but the Bears have been a heavy leader since offering last summer. Some close to Adams called him a ‘silent’ Cal commit and it always seemed like just a matter of time before he made the news public.

“I’m very excited about my decision,” Adams said. “I was going to wait and announce at the Army game but I just wanted to get it over with. I also feel like announcing now I can help try and influence other players to come in with me to help turn the program around. I’m going to be recruiting hard for UCLA, it’s a great school, and I think there’s a lot of new excitement and buzz with this staff and I’m excited to be a part of it.”
